Important Little League Base Running Rules

​For nearly two centuries, the sport of baseball has been affectionately referred to as America's pastime. The game remains extremely popular in the United States, with 17.3 million participants in 2024, up from 16.7 million in 2023. These participants include approximately 2 million boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 16 who play Little League baseball, plus an additional 360,000 softball players. Volunteer Little League coaches are responsible for instructing youth athletes in the fundamentals of the sport, including important rules governing base running.

A batter becomes a baserunner once they reach first base, either by a walk or an error, or by recording a hit. Players may also reach first base via the uncaught third strike rule, which is one of several rules coaches must impart to young players.

The uncaught third strike mechanic is only in effect if first base is unoccupied or if there are two outs in the inning. If these conditions are met and the catcher does not catch a third strike pitch, the batter becomes a baserunner. The player must run to first and reach the base before the catcher or another player throws the ball to the first baseman.

The uncaught third strike rule is sometimes referred to as "stealing first base," but this play does not count as a steal. Players must learn several rules involving how to legally steal bases.

In Little League games, players can steal second and third bases, as well as home plate, so long as a few conditions are satisfied. First, baserunners cannot leave their base in any way when a pitcher is holding the ball and is in contact with the pitcher's plate and the catcher is in the catcher's box, awaiting the delivery of the next pitch. This means that Little League players are prohibited from taking leads, or "leading off."

Little League softball players must observe a few specific rules regarding leads and stealing, such as the base running circle rule. Under this rule, players are prohibited from taking leads when the pitcher is standing in the circle, which forms an 8-foot radius around the pitcher's plate. If the pitcher is standing in this area and not actively making a play, all baserunners must either stand on their base or attempt to steal the next base.

Once a pitch has reached the batter, baserunners are permitted to run to the next base, including home plate. Contrary to a popular misconception, Little League baserunners are not compelled to slide into home plate, or into any other base. The requirement to slide into the base only applies at home plate if a slide is necessary to avoid crashing into a fielder who is holding the ball and waiting to tag the baserunner out. If the baserunner does not slide in this situation, they should be automatically called out by the umpire.

On the other hand, if a batter becomes a baserunner as a result of the uncaught third strike mechanic, they can slide into first base as they would any other base. While baserunners cannot leave the base path to avoid being tagged out, they have a few options to avoid a tag in addition to sliding. For instance, it is legal for Little League players to jump over, or hurdle, fielders attempting to make a tag.

Finally, coaches must remind youth athletes to be wary of live ball outs while running the bases. During Little League games, a runner is called out if they make contact with a fairly batted ball in fair territory, assuming the ball has not been touched by a fielder or has passed the reach of an infielder, not counting the pitcher. It does not matter if the runner accidentally or intentionally touches the ball in this situation.

The rules are slightly different for a thrown ball. If an infielder throws a ball and it hits a baserunner, the runner is only called out if an umpire deems the contact intentional on the runner's part.

Three Overuse Injuries Common in Marathon Training

​For the nearly three-quarters of Americans who do not meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended guidelines for physical activity, the idea of running a marathon likely feels very remote, if not impossible. However, any person who commits between 16 and 20 weeks to training should be able to complete a race. Throughout training, runners must listen to medical professionals, more experienced athletes, and their own bodies in order to minimize the chances of common running injuries.

Runner's knee ranks among the most common injuries during marathon training. Officially known as patellofemoral syndrome, runner's knee is signaled by a persistent dull pain localized at the front of the knee, radiating out from where the joint connects the tibia to the femur. Runner's knee may be sensitive to the touch and feels worse while in motion; the condition is often described as two pieces rubbing or grinding against one another.

The prevalence of runner's knee underscores the importance of proper technique for runners, as many instances of the condition can be attributed to imbalanced posture and other poor biomechanics. Inferior footwear can also contribute to runner's knee, as can weak thigh muscles and tightness. Training too much without resting can cause or exacerbate the symptoms of runner's knee.

As with many injuries incurred during marathon training, the most effective form of treatment is rest. Runners should also ice the knee, apply compression, and keep the knee elevated, a process collectively known as RICE. Individuals can further benefit from working with physiotherapists who can demonstrate targeted stretches, strengthening exercises, and hands-on manipulations to further alleviate symptoms.

Some patients may benefit from a form of treatment called extracorporeal shockwave therapy, a minimally invasive procedure that uses small impulses of energy to stimulate soft tissue structures that have been impacted by injury. Most importantly, physiotherapists can assess a runner's gait and help them develop a more efficient and biomechanically sound running style.

Achilles tendonitis is another condition typical among the distance running community. The injury occurs when the Achilles tendon, which is located on the back of the heel and connects two calf muscles, becomes inflamed. The severity of the inflammation can vary considerably, from mild discomfort to severe pain. The ankle may appear normal or visibly swollen.

One of the major contributing factors to Achilles tendonitis is overuse. The likelihood of overuse injuries increases dramatically during marathon training, especially if runners are not careful about increasing the frequency, intensity, and duration of their runs. In addition to running, Achilles tendonitis pain may increase when a person is walking, using stairs, or standing on tiptoes.

RICE treatment methods can help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with Achilles tendonitis. Care providers may also recommend pain relief medication and physiotherapy, along with targeted exercises and stretches. Like athletes with runner's knee, individuals suffering from Achilles tendonitis may benefit from better running shoes and improved running technique.

Finally, medial tibial stress syndrome is a common injury that can completely derail marathon training. Better known as shin splints, the condition is defined by inflammation throughout the muscles, tendons, and bones surrounding the tibia. For some people, shin splints feel like a dull ache throughout the shin, but for others, the pain is sharp and intense.

Excessive training, improper footwear, and muscle tightness or imbalance all contribute to shin splits. Runners with flat feet are at an elevated risk for the condition. RICE and pain relief medication are the most common treatment for shin splints. Runners must abstain from all training until the symptoms have dissipated.

Organizations such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provide citizens with many ideas for conserving natural spaces in their communities and taking part in larger conservation efforts.

To start, individuals should educate themselves regarding local and national environmental concerns. Increased knowledge not only helps people understand where their efforts are needed most, but also allows them to educate others about the importance of conservation and the value of America's natural resources. The benefits of volunteering time, money, and resources to philanthropic organizations are many. Individuals enjoy physical and psychological boosts after volunteering and can claim tax breaks based on their volunteer time and donations, to say nothing of the altruistic merit of helping those in need and strengthening the greater community. Individuals interested in volunteering in their community may consider several areas of need.

To begin, America's animal shelters are overcrowded and understaffed. In 2023, 6.5 million cats and dogs were taken in by shelters, up from 5.5 million in 2020. Unfortunately, adoptions are not keeping pace, at just over 6 million, resulting in a net gain of more than 500,000 animals.

Individuals should contact a local shelter and inquire about their volunteer needs, but they can expect a few areas of import. Many shelters require administrative assistance or help cleaning offices and animal spaces. Individuals who enjoy working with animals can walk dogs and play with the pets. Teaching Defense to Youth Basketball Players

​Basketball is one of the most popular physical activities among youth in the United States. According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, more than 28 million Americans aged 6 and older play the sport of basketball each year. It is the nation's only sport with double-digit participation rates for children ages 6 to 12. Individuals tasked with coaching a youth basketball team have several responsibilities, including player safety. Coaches are also expected to help players understand basic elements of strategy, such as teaching players how to run a defensive system.

Defense in basketball can be broken down into two primary categories: zone defense and man-to-man defense, or simply man defense. There are many different subsets of each system, such as a 3-2 zone or a press defense. Generally speaking, a zone defense involves players guarding a certain section of the court and taking on any defensive assignment (player) that enters their area, while man defenses require players to stay with a specific opponent across the court, guarding them at all times.

Youth coaches should consider several things when developing a defensive system. To start, coaches must account for talented and passionate players who intend to pursue basketball at higher levels of competition. With this in mind, a defensive system should feature moves and philosophies that prepare players for more advanced basketball tactics. Similarly, youth players should be exposed to different facets of defense, which means that coaches should at least experiment with a combination defense consisting of both zone and man assignments.

However, youth basketball coaches are also responsible for helping children enjoy themselves on the court. Defensive strategies should not be overly complicated and should be designed with the youth player’s strengths and limitations in mind. Although zone and man defenses are the most abundant and commonly used, they are not always the best fit for a youth team.

The pack line defense, on the other hand, can be viewed as the perfect defensive system for a team of young, inexperienced players. The pack line defense is a variant of man-to-man coverage. In most man-to-man systems, players are not just required to cover their assignment, but to use their hands and bodies to block off passing lanes. While playing in a pack line defense, players are instead instructed to stay closer to the basket.

The few adjustments between traditional man defense and pack line defense provide multiple benefits. Individual players have fewer responsibilities to keep track of, can maintain stamina, and can rely on teammates arranged in help positions, meaning they can provide coverage for a blown defensive assignment or provide support with a double team. At the same time, these small changes make it easy for youth players to switch to a traditional man defense as they get older. Both systems use the same strategies for attacking ball screens, boxing out and rebounding, and defending in transition.

Developed by Dick Bennett at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the pack line defense is used by many youth basketball squads in the US. It is also common at the high school level and is even used by accomplished college coaches like Jim Boone of Delta State University and Chris Mack at Xavier University, among others.

Adult case managers must attend to several unique responsibilities, from providing emotional support during medical emergencies to coordinating services with medical, mental health, and government agencies. Multidisciplinary collaborations represent a major element of an adult case manager’s daily activities. Aspiring and less experienced case managers should take the time to understand the different roles of the various professionals they collaborate with.

Adult case managers frequently collaborate and communicate with medical doctors. Case managers help coordinate care when clients are receiving multiple services. This may require discussions about which medical equipment should be used, or simply involve ensuring that the client has transportation to and from doctors’ appointments. Case managers also facilitate communications between doctors and patients, partly by providing patient education regarding specific medical topics. If a patient feels that their needs are being overlooked, case managers can discuss their client’s concerns with the medical team and advocate for changes to the overall treatment plan.

Nurses are key members of any medical team. Adult case managers work closely with nurses in both in-patient and out-patient settings. These are only a few of the professionals adult case managers work with on a regular basis. In some situations, adult case managers will actively collaborate with these professionals to achieve a joint objective. In other scenarios, case managers will communicate with these professionals on behalf of their clients and advocate for specific services and support.
